if love at first sight is real: a case for the concept

Image
Paris is the love capital in the world. So, it's a cliche that I find myself here at the beginning of writing this piece, one to bring light to my skeptical view of love at first glance.   Paris, France After writing my first post expressing my opinion about the concept of love at first sight as a wildly dreamy social construct, multiple people had reached out to me, countering my point of view.  For the sake of argument in this post, I define love at first sight as meeting someone, saying hello, and chatting for a few minutes. I know, it's not very specific, but for now, I'd like to leave out immediate encounters. I believe that contrary to famous fairy tales and Shakespear plays, one must at least speak with their potential mate before falling in love with them.   Of course, feel free to message me if you disagree or have experienced love without talking to someone. I'd love to hear from you ! Ellie and her husband, Ezra " I kne...

5 ways YOU can love your planet more

Image
As I bumped along a two-way highway surrounded by thousands of forest-green trees and marshland, I felt taken aback by Alaska's beauty.  We were driving through a tremendous mountain range.   The entire landscape was populated by  tall purple flowers, fireweed, which created a cocoon of peppy serenity.   The entire world seemed to enclose into a wonderland of wilderness as we drove out of the city of Anchorage to the Russian River.  Buildings and cars became more sparse, creeks, trees, and rivers became wilder.   I began to feel small, but at peace with my own insignificance.  Being in nature commonly causes me to quietly sense my own mortality.  It brings lightness to the heavyweight of my complications--that is why it's incredibly healing.   Life on our planet is resilient, it adapts, it survives, it dies, it mutates, it produces, it moves slowly.   But 'modern' human civilization moves quickly, as the yea...

love at first sight: a case against the concept

Image
Yes, we all have met someone and instantly feel the chemistry, attraction and deep connection with them. But is the initial feeling of intense butterflies in your stomach love?  Is love this immediate? I'll be the first to admit that I've experienced a romantic meeting that seemed cosmic, where I've immediately felt I have found 'the one.' The relationship moved quickly, too quickly, and before I knew it, I was walking down the aisle to an attractive stranger. I realized man y months later that our connection was intense infatuation, and when those butterflies revealed that they were fleeting, the relationship crumbled to the ground. What held us together for years was an idea . The idea that we both were destined to be together. We were confident of our divine connection; that against all the odds and outside influences our bond was going to make it. I held on to our initial meeting with all my might, as proof of our love . It had ...

sister moon love: Bethany's story

Image
Bethany Gurrola, creator, and owner  of sister moon 'I am practicing loving myself every day' I wrote in cursive letters with a jelly pen on a red strip of construction paper.   I folded the paper into a small rectangle and placed it into Miya's mason jar.   Miya is nine years old and smiled, thanked me, and then continues to write out her eleven affirmations; intended to be gifted to each girl (including herself) in the sister moon circle.   "The self-love jars are to remind ourselves that we're just learning, growing, changing," said Bethany Gurrola, owner, and creator of the sister moon series. "(They are) to make sure that our love for ourselves comes first before our love for others.   We can't fully love others until we love ourselves."   Self-love jar decorated by Bethany.  The girls fill the jars with affirmations and take them home at the end of the series The self-love jar is a staple practice in the sister moon...
